For any budding Fashion designer, it is inevitably hard to make your break, though Mary is an example that it is possible! At London Fashion Weekend we were lucky enough to listen to a talk by the lady herself. Here’s our take on the talk she did, giving great insight into how she made it in the competitive world of fashion design.
Mary started out in the US studying architecture, however keen to pursue a career in textiles, she transferred to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Mary says that Louise Wilson, who previously taught the likes of Alexander McQueen and Jonathan Saunders, shaped her career and gave a once shy Mary strength in her convictions. Louise encouraged Mary to do what her strengths were in and this is how she developed the recognisable style that she has today! Mary’s grounds were in architecture so what she considered beautiful changed a lot, with her style becoming about embellishment.
- Mary opened The Graduate Show and Sarah Moore mentioned her collection on style.com.
- Keira Knightly wore one of her pieces to the Venice Film Festival
- One lady thanks one of Mary’s dresses for reuniting her with her ex, they are now married thanks to the dress that she wore!
Her collection for AW15 is all about modernism (inspired by car roofs surprisingly!), pvc plastics, kynophobia, foam bags and embossed paisley leather.
Looking ahead to those pieces previewed at London Fashion Week this year, the SS16 collection has influences of cosmology (in simple terms, when the earth was flat) and Charlotte Ramplin.
