Forget contouring, chalking, balayage and strobing – 2016 is all about the classic-with-a-twist beauty look.

Last year was big for beauty. Beauty bloggers became bona fide celebrities, actual celebrities released their own ranges and there were endless trends to try, from overlining your lips to glittering up your brows.

For 2016, though, the beauty landscape looks a little different. If 2015 was our experimental year, the next 12 months will be about rediscovering the classics… with a modern twist, of course. Here are 5 of our favourites.

Blue eyeshadow

Ok, we know it sounds totally 80s but stay with us – blue eyeshadow was all over the SS16 shows, from Hugo Boss to Marc Jacobs. Go bright and bold with a cobalt liquid liner, or keep it subtle with a light blue wash over the lid. Just make sure the rest of your face is fresh and natural – no stripy blusher, please!

Twisted hair

Hair in 2016 is a little more sophisticated than the undone waves of last year – think simple twists, subtle braids and classic buns. To get this look, add texture by letting hair dry naturally then sweep hair across to the side, twist into a loose bun and pin into place.

Apple red lips

Red lipstick is nothing new, but designers really embraced it for SS16. And not just any old red – Victoria Beckham, Oscar de la Renta and DKNY among others chose a specific apple red shade for their shows. Luckily for us, it’s one of those magical colours that looks good on absolutely everyone.

Fun French tips

Don’t worry – we’re not talking nude nails with bright white tips. The French mani has been updated for 2016, and now it’s all about clashing block colours and cool patterns. Try painting on a wavy tip in statement red or go for an ombre effect with blue tips fading to a soft peach.

Brushed up brows

We’re moving away from perfectly arched brows towards a look that’s more natural… good news if you’re a little lax with your brow maintenance! To get the look, let them grow out a big (plucking any total strays) then style by brushing upwards and applying gel to hold in place.
