It’s the ultimate festive drink that means Christmas is really on the way – here’s our fave mulled wine recipe.

If you’re hosting the festive party this year, mulled wine is the perfect drink – make up a big pan and keep it simmering, then ladle out into mugs as people come in from the cold. It’s spicy, warming and full of cheer – like Christmas in a cup!

 How to make mulled wine

To serve 10

2 clementines

1 lemon

1 lime

200g caster sugar

6 whole cloves

1 stick cinnamon

3 fresh bay leaves

1 whole nutmeg

1 vanilla pod, halved

2 star anise

2 bottles of Italian red wine

To make

Peel the clementines, lemon and lime. Add the sugar to a large saucepan over a medium heat, then add the peel and squeeze in the clementine juice. Add the cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaves, 10 to 12 gratings of nutmeg and your vanilla pod. Stir in enough wine to cover the sugar.

Leave to simmer until the sugar has completely dissolved, then bring to the boil for 4 minutes until you have a thick syrup. Turn the heat down to low and add the star anise and the rest of the wine. Heat for 5 minutes then serve.
