Tuck it in a la Lou Doillon, or leave it unbuttoned like Jane Birkin: a simple shirt is an effortless style staple for women around the globe. Seeing you from sartorial and sophisticated to comfy and casual, the perfect shirt is a timeless wardrobe essential that needn’t be restricted to work wear.

To prove its versatility and provide inspiration on how to wear a shirt, we challenged fashion bloggers Rachel and Holly to style it five different ways.

Go Girly

Shirts may be famed for their masculine, tailored edge but girly girls needn’t shy away from them. “You can create a feminine look with a women’s white shirt by adding a touch of pink like I’ve done here.”

Holly paired her peter pan collared shirt with a candy-floss pink midi skirt to achieve her pretty look, keeping it classic with some black heels.

Tip: If shirts feel a little sartorial for you, try a feminine peter pan collar like Holly’s.

Boho Chic

The beauty of a plain shirt is its versatility. Whether it’s a feminine ‘40s suit or a ‘70s boho look, the shirt feels at home in a whole host of different styles.

Rachel teamed her rust-orange pussybow shirt with high-waisted flares and a wide-brimmed hat – Boho chic at its best! “I wanted to keep this look very simple, but I added some accessories to give it something special.”

Tip: Don’t be afraid to wear loose-fitting bottoms with an over-sized shirt; just tuck and pull everything in at the waist to create shape.

Collared shirts are perfect for layering under jumpers, cardigans, dresses and dungarees. As a lover of all things monochrome, Holly wore hers beneath a polka dot jumper and bomber jacket with her black skinny jeans.

“This shirt is quite feminine, but I wanted something a little more edgy. Black is a great way to toughen a pretty item of clothing.”

Tip: Pull your collar over the neckline of your jumper and leave the bottom of your shirt untucked for an effortless look like Holly’s.

Smarten it Up

The classic pencil skirt and fitted shirt combo is a look loved by many and will never go out of style. Holly stuck to her trusted monochrome colour scheme by teaming her buttoned up white shirt with a knee-length black skirt and wool coat.

“I think monochrome is the best way to go when it comes to work wear – it’s so sophisticated.”

Tip: Prefer to keep it casual? Make your shirt work by rolling up your sleeves or untucking for a laidback look.

Keep it casual

It may be renowned as a work-wardrobe staple but when it’s styled the right way, a shirt can make the perfect weekend wear. Rachel tucked her shirt into her reliable skinny jeans and cowboy boots for off-duty chic.

“This is my favourite way of wearing the shirt: tucked in, buttoned up and sleeves rolled down.”

Tip: A bold coloured shirt adds something special to a casual look like Rachel’s.
