Desk looking a little drab? Here are five quick and easy ways to spruce up your workspace without bothering your boss…

Unless you work for Google or Apple (in which case – any jobs going?), your office is probably pretty run-of-the-mill. We’re talking ceiling tiles, filing cabinets and maybe even a dusty old fax machine. How very un-Pinterest…

Offices aren’t particularly inspiring places, décor-wise, and going to work among half-dead plants and unwashed coffee cups can be a little disheartening after a while. So, we’ve come up with five quick and easy ways you can give your office a cheerful makeover – without asking the boss’s permission. Take a look…

Introduce proper plants

Offices always seem to have a wilting plant in the corner – wilting because no one waters the poor thing. Succulents and cacti make perfect office plants because they require so little upkeep – you can literally leave them for months without water. Pop them in a sunny spot and they’ll add instant life to your workspace.

 Add a personal touch

If you’re confined to a desk for most of the day, make sure it’s packed with personality. Framed photos, colourful stationery and an arty calendar will give you things to gaze at when work isn’t holding your attention. You might even be able to hang a pretty print at eye level – look for motivational messages to get you through those long Monday mornings.

Get fruity

A communal fruit bowl not only adds a pop of colour to your space, but it’s a great way to encourage healthy snacking. Get a group of colleagues together, buy a bowl (we love this hammered copper one) and take it in turns to fill it with fresh fruit. Try different flavours, textures and colours to really make a feature of it – dragon fruit, plums and raspberries look great together (and they taste good, too!).

Try textiles

One of the quickest and easiest ways to add detail to a space is with throws, rugs and cushions. Drape a patterned throw, like this monochrome jacquard style over your office chair and add a pop of colour with a cushion. And if you can get away with it, this beautiful cotton rug will look great under your desk.

Take it to the kitchen

Your makeover doesn’t have to be confined to your own desk – working your magic in the communal spaces will put a smile on everyone’s face. Something as simple as buying new mugs for your colleagues (The Pound Shop have lots of lovely designs for a quid to keep things cheap) or bringing in freshly baked cupcakes will cheer things up in an instant.
