The French are famous for their cool, calm and collected style, and when it comes to deciding on the day’s outfit, they’re unflappable. What’s their secret? They have incredibly workable wardrobes, filled with classic, capsule items that they re-style over and over again.

Our survey of over 300 French fashionistas found that the five must-have items that make up the capsule wardrobe list are:

And to bring you inspiration on how to style them day-in-day-out for British streets, we’ve challenged top UK fashion bloggers to wear the capsule wardrobe essentials for a week.

First up Carly Musleh of

Nipping in and out of meetings, Carly kept her look chic and professional by slipping on her staple little black dress – paired with a duster-style jacket, classic black stilettos, and a big black tote. “This is my business mode attire – formal, yet versatile.”

Carly is ahead of the curve with her light grey jacket – investing early in one of AW15’s top colour trends to ensure she’s on top of transitional style.

Carly’s LBD tip: “Pair your LBD with a smart coat and heels, and you’re ready to take on the day!”

Carly styled her staple skinny jeans with a plain black tee and a black tuxedo-style blazer for a brunch date. Adding a pair of dainty heels and a bold clutch bag polishes this otherwise relaxed look, making it perfect for whatever the day has in store. We adore the red-lip & monochrome-clutch combo.

Carly’s denim tip: “Dark-wash denim is ideal for a smarter looking jean.”

Styling her LBD for the second time this week – this time for an event – Carly paired her dress with faux-leather trousers and added a vampy pop of colour with pointy, patent and practical red ballet pumps.

“The LBD is reborn, as it looks like a long-line shirt or sleeveless tux when worn over trousers”.

Carly’s pump tip: “Adding flat pumps stops any look from appearing overdone, whilst the style and fit keeps the outfit modern and feminine.”

Laidback yet luxurious, Thursday’s outfit saw Carly from the school run right through to the evening. She paired her indigo skinny jeans with a white fitted shirt and her ballet pumps – low-key French chic at its finest! ‘The minimalism of this outfit creates a crisp, luxe feel that’s clean and sharp’.

Carly’s shirt tip: “Opt for a shirt with a little accent. This Laura Clement shirt has a gold accent button on the collar which I love.”

‘Friday is the time to let your hair down – the time to really bring out your personality in your outfit’. Carly chose an off-duty slogan T-shirt for dress-down Friday, pairing it with a leather skirt and her staple black jacket to “reign the casual look back in”.

“The black jacket is incredibly versatile and its simplicity means it can be worn with anything”.

The finishing touches? Carly’s signature red lip and a matching clutch – both bringing out the colour in her super-cool tee.

Carly’s black jacket tip: “An interesting lining adds extra detail, and makes rolling your sleeves more fun!”
